Algarve Tourism: Portimão port prepares for busiest week to date

A total 4,959 passengers plus 1,985 crew are to visit the city, which is fast becoming one of Europe’s main ports of call thanks to its strategic positioning between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

First to visit Portimão is Marine Universal’s vessel ‘Vistamar’, which will be carrying 295 passengers and 110 crew who are sailing between Lisbon and Seville.

Following the same route on September 20th is Thomson Cruises’ ‘Thomson Destiny’, which will dock in Portimão with 1,504 passengers and 525 crew on board. The next day Holland America Line’s ‘Rotterdam’ will dock with 1,316 passengers and 600 crew, visiting Portimão while sailing between Lisbon and Cadiz.

On September 23rd the ‘Thomson Spirit’ (also belonging to Thomson Cruises) will visit Portimão with 1,254 passengers and 520 crew, midway between its Lisbon-Gibraltar route.

Finally, on September 25th Transocean Tours’ ‘Astor’ will sail into Portimão’s port for a visit, bringing with it 590 tourists and a crew of 230, before carrying onto Cadiz, Tangier, Malaga, Almeria, Barcelona finalizing the trip in Nice.

Meanwhile Portimão’s up-and-coming port was featured at the European Seatrade Exhibition, which took place in Hamburg from September 15th – 17th, in Hamburg, Germany. The European Seatrade Exhibition is the largest event of its kind this side of the Atlantic and would have cemented Portimão’s growing profile as an important destination on the international cruise circuit.
