Algarve News: Aer Lingus inaugurates Faro – London route

Date: 30/4/2009

The twice-daily route, which departs early morning and late evening, will boost Aer Lingus’s current flights on offer to Faro by 150,000 seats, raising the overall annual total to the Algarve to 430,000 seats over four routes. Flights start from €26.99.

To celebrate the launch, the group of 80 professionals were treated to a whistle-stop tour of the Algarve, enjoying the best of what the region offers for 24 hours.

An optional itinerary including spa treatments, golf, a jeep safari, nightlife and gastronomy was drawn up in collaboration with Tourism of Portugal and the Algarve Tourism Association. And even though the stay was to be a very short one, all guests arrived in excited high spirits.

Aer Lingus’s Commercial Director for Portugal, Aisling Lyons, told The Portugal News that the original plan to celebrate the route’s inauguration was to hold a ‘Portugal Night’ themed party in London. But after brainstorming, the executives decided to pull out all stops and instead fly a select group to the destination in question; to experience the airline and the region it flies to.

According to Aisling, Aer Lingus’s figures continue to flourish and a growth of 68 percent, in comparison to last year has been calculated for this year.

"Even in the downturn people still want to come to the sun", she said of the company’s popular Algarve routes. "Figures are still going up".

This latest route indeed represents a positive expansion for the Irish company, forecasting growth not only in the Algarve but also in the UK, with Gatwick being the company’s first UK base.

Soon a number of The Portugal News’ lucky ‘Aer Lingus’ competition winners will also be experiencing the Faro-Gatwick flight for themselves.

Aer Lingus will shortly be introducing another new route, from Lisbon to Cork, and currently flies from the Algarve to Dublin (10 flights per week), to Belfast (five flights per week) and to Cork, with four weekly flights. Source: The Online Resident
