During a presentation of the project at the Lagos Cultural Centre on September 18, Câmara President Julio Barroso revealed that the city will have a revamped riverside area as well as a total of 876 car parking spaces from two new underground car parks.
"These three projects represent a new phase for the city," said Julio Barroso. "Lagos will become a modern city with ease of access, without loosing its historical character."
The renovation works for the riverside area will cost an estimated 2.2 million euros and encompass an area of 22,000sqm between the Avenida dos Descobrimentos and the Avenida das Comunidades Portuguesas in the east, the Ponta da Bandeira fort in the south, the city walls and historical centre in the west and by Rua Portas de Portugal in the north.
The work to be carried out in this area will include the construction of a new water garden and pedestriansed areas as well as the renovation of the existing Constituição garden and Praça do Pelourinho.
Both underground car parks will be constructed simultaneously by a partnership between the municipal company Futurlagos and a private consortium.
The first will be located underneath the existing car park near Lagos court along the riverside area and will include a total of 480 car parking spaces on two levels.
The second will be located in the Parque da Cidade, also known as Anel Verde, and will include 396 car parking spaces on three levels. This will be covered by a large park that will include water features and shaded seating areas.
"Throughout the construction period, which is due to last until the end of 2009, archaeologists will be present on all of the sites affected to ensure that any historical artefacts are documented and preserved," said Julio Barroso.
He also added that during the affected period, signposts will be placed along the main roads for residents and tourists to access nine alternative car parks around the city. Source: The Online Resident
