LOULE Town Council have announced their decision to award ANA, the company in charge of managing Portugal’s international airports, the go ahead for the preparation of the studies necessary for the construction of the new aerodrome which will serve the tourist areas of Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago.
The Town Council announced that after the successful completion of the studies on the technical viability of the project, a new 300,000 euros contract has been signed with ANA for the elaboration of the development plan for the new infrastructure. This plan includes the environ-mental impact assessment studies, as well as the business plan for the new aerodrome which, among other matters, will analyse the potential future number of aircraft movements per year to determine the size of the project. Loule Mayor, Seruca Emidio, said the aerodrome will be built next to the Cimpor cement factory in Cerro do Parragil near Boliqueime with good access to the tourist resorts, the Via do Infante motorway and the Faro International Airport. The Mayor added that the new infrastructure aims to attract private jets and smaller commercial aircraft, weighing up to 20 tonnes, creating an alternative to Faro airport for tourists holidaying at nearby luxury resorts.
In addition, Seruca Emidio stressed the new facility would be fundamental for the increase of the top-level quality tourism offer in the area, aiming to attract more tourists with greater spending power. The Town Council explained that in the first phase of the project, which is scheduled to be carried out during the next six months, two automatic weather stations will be installed on the site, to gather information about the prevailing winds and other meteorological data fundamental for the development of the project.
Potentially, the aerodrome will create more than 150 jobs during construction and operation. Though the construction will be undertaken by the Loule Town Council, once open, the management of the aerodrome will be handed over to a private company.
The construction of the aerodrome, a 1.5 million euros investment, is part of the "Vilamoura XXI" project and has already been mapped on the Loule Municipal Planning Document. Source: Euro Weekly News
