Construction of FIESA, the International Sand Sculpture Festival, starts this week at the usual venue in Pêra (Algarve).
Some 60 sculptors from all over the world have only 60 days to model 35,000 tonnes of sand on the 15 hectare site.
The theme of the 6th such festival is Hollywood Cinema and the sculptures will be based on some of the best known and most iconic movies such as King Kong, Casablanca, Star Trek, Alien, ET, The Lord of the Rings and many others.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 22nd May to 22nd October, and it is estimated that it will be visited by over 200,000 people; the site will also host different kinds of entertainment, including concerts, and will have an area for visitors of all ages to try their hand at sand sculpture.
